I’m Jonathan Samuelson. I was raised in Bethel and I grew up in McGrath. My family is from the mid-river, Red Devil and Georgetown, so I’m from the whole river is what I tell people. I’m often the youngest person at the table, which makes me hesitate sometimes, but it is also an opportunity for me to learn and share a different perspective. It allows me to bridge any generational gaps that might exist.

We are all new at what we call ‘co-management.’ We all have the same experience in co-management. But we are fully capable of managing fisheries and deserve to be more than just advisors to the process. The Commission is still young, but we are learning more and more. We can make others aware of traditional methods of management that have sustained populations for a really long time. We have managed our wildlife and fisheries for centuries. We can make sure that those ways of management are at the table and in the discussion….

Salmon have been a part of our lives ever since I can remember, no matter where I have lived along the river. It is part of our diet, but its more than that. To me it brings family together, I feel that it helps heal relationships. When it is time to fish, we all know that the work needs to be done, so even if there are any rifts, we work them out. And I’ve seen it unite people of the river, especially through work of the Commission.
