Knowledge Documentation Overview

Indigenous Knowledge (IK) and Traditional Knowledge (TK) are dynamic bodies of knowledge and science held and shared by Indigenous People based on millennia-old observations, beliefs and values, and stories and traditions related to local environments and ways of life. IK and TK are key parts of our salmon management and research. 

KRITFC has a strategic initiative to Document Indigenous Knowledge of our Kuskokwim Elders and communities in order to help build comprehensive databases of Yup’ik, Deg Xit’an, Dena’ina, and Upper Kuskokwim Dené Knowledge. These databases and projects aim to document IK and TK for not only gravel-to-gravel, river-to-seas fisheries management but also for the generations of fishers along the Kuskokwim River to come.
