Donating Traditional Foods to Communities Displaced By Typhoon Halong

We hope you are safe and taking care in the wake of Typhoon Halong. Several people have reached out to KRITFC wondering how to donate traditional foods to families and communities affected by the storm. Here is some information.


For evacuees displaced in Bethel and Y-K Delta villages:

In December 2026, KRITFC, Bethel Community Services Foundation, Alaska Sea Grant, and the City of Bethel are organizing donations and distribution of traditional foods for families affected by ex-Typhoon Halong in Bethel and the Y-K Delta.

  • Where: Donations will be collected in Bethel and distributed to families displaced locally, as well as shipped to impacted families in villages.

  • What: Evacuees have specifically requested whitefish, herring in oil, seal meat, seal oil, whale meat, muktuk, geese, ducks, moose, salmonberries, and blackberries. Any other kind of harvested food is appreciated!

  • Donations should be foods harvested in 2025 | not freezer-burned | individually packaged (if possible) | vacuum-sealed (if possible)

  • When to drop-off donations in Bethel: Food donations can be dropped off at BCSF’s office/freezers (1795 Chief Eddie Hoffman Highway, Bethel, AK) at the following times:

    • Weekdays: December 1-5 and 8-10 from 12-1pm and 3-6pm

    • Weekend: December 6 from 12-4pm

  • How to ship in donations:

    • From Y-K Delta villages: We are reaching out to local airlines about free backhaul services and will update this page with information. In the meantime, please ship to Bethel with you airline of choice. Please put “Terese Vicente, KRITFC” and “907-545-7388” as the pick-up contact. If possible, please ship donations by December 10.

    • From outside the region: Ship to Bethel with Alaska Air Cargo, Everts, or Lynden. Please put “Terese Vicente, KRITFC” and “907-545-7388” as the pick-up contact. If possible, please ship donations by December 10.

    • We appreciate payment of freight shipping as part of your donation. However, please contact us at 907-545-7388 (text/call) or donations@kritfc.org for shipping assistance.

    • Please send a copy of your airway bill or the freight information by text to 907-545-7388 or email to donations@kritfc.org so we can prepare for your shipment.

  • When donations will be distributed: The information below has been updated to reflect delays receiving shipments of donations, and distributions depend on when and how many donations are received. We are hoping to get foods out as quickly as possible!

    • We are hoping to ship out donations to villages as soon as the week of December 15. If you live in a Y-K Delta village, lost your freezer or foods due to the typhoon, and would like to receive traditional foods, please fill out this form by December 12 to get on our distribution list: https://forms.gle/J8if2FQWCGY6eQf4A. For evacuees displaced in Anchorage:

The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) and the Alaska Native Heritage Center (ANHC) are accepting traditional and subsistence foods donations to cook and/or distribute to folks in Anchorage.

  • Make sure all donations - like seal, fish, game, berries, and others - are in good condition, harvested and frozen or preserved within the past year.

  • We are not aware of any freight collection efforts in Anchorage at this time. Please pack donations on your next trip to Anchorage or arrange for someone in Anchorage to pick-up and drop-off.

  • For drop-off at ANTHC:

    • Bring donations to ANTHC Lodging at Tudor Centre, 4001 Tudor Centre Drive, on Monday-Friday from 9am to 4pm.

    • For small donations, please bring to the food service staff in the Cafe.

    • For large donations - requiring assistance with large coolers or heavy boxes - please come inside first to connect with food service staff.

Additionally, the Alaska Department of Fish & Game has announced an emergency, registration moose hunt in Unit 18, Zone 1. Permits will be available online November 5 at 9:00am, and the hunt will close January 15, 2026. Proxy hunting is allowed. Contact ADF&G in Bethel for more information: 907-543-2433.
