KRITFC Seeks a Youth Advisor
We are seeking a Youth Advisor to help guide our organization! Apply by March 25, 2026.
Position Description
The Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission’s (KRITFC) Youth Advisor provides guidance for KRITFC’s fisheries management, research, monitoring, outreach, and advocacy work. Specifically, this non-voting position functions similarly to the Elder Advisor to guide KRITFC’s Commissioners, Executive Council members, and In-Season Managers to apply Indigenous Knowledge and values and the best available Western science to guide all KRITFC work. While not a paid position, honorariums are provided for meetings attended (in-person and virtual) and all travel costs to meetings and events attended as a KRITFC representative are covered.
What to expect from service as KRITFC’s Youth Advisor:
Opportunities to learn about Tribal governance; Tribal, federal, and state fisheries management; salmon monitoring and research; traditional stewardship of Kuskokwim salmon fisheries.
Professional and personal mentorship from KRITFC Elders, leaders, and staff.
Increase familiarity with meeting processes, including consensus-based decision-making and state and federal fisheries regulatory meetings.
Regular attendance at meetings throughout the year, including the annual meeting (early April); Executive Council meetings (4-5 times per year, roughly January, March, May, August, November); and In-Season Management meetings (about weekly, late May to August).
Opportunities to advocate and testify in support of protecting Kuskokwim salmon and traditional ways of life.
Occasional travel around the Kuskokwim region and state to attend KRITFC meetings and events.
A direct role in shaping Tribal-led fisheries stewardship in the Kuskokwim region.
Gain skills in public speaking, reading, writing, advocacy, and meeting facilitation.
Increased exposure to Tribal-led fisheries stewardship around Alaska.
Responsibilities:
Regular attendance at KRITFC meetings, including the annual meeting (typically held in early April), either in-person or virtually.
Provide youth perspective and knowledge to guide and direct staff and support KRITFC leadership in fisheries management, research, monitoring, outreach, and advocacy work.
Provide oral and/or written testimony in various fisheries arenas (e.g., Board of Fisheries, North Pacific Fisheries Management Council) as needed, either in-person or virtually.
Qualifications:
Between 18 and 24 years of age.
Experience with Kuskokwim subsistence fisheries, personally or professionally.
Must be enrolled in KRITFC region Tribe (Akiachak, Akiak, Aniak, Atmautluak, Chefornak, Chuathbaluk, Crooked Creek, Eek, Georgetown, Kasigluk, Kipnuk, Kongiganak, Kwethluk, Kwigillingok, Lime Village, Lower Kalskag, McGrath, Napaimute, Napakiak, Napaskiak, Nikolai, Nunapitchuk, Orutsaramiut Native Council/Bethel, Oscarville, Quinhagak, Red Devil, Sleetmute, Stony River, Takotna, Telida, Tuluksak, Tuntutuliak, Upper Kalskag).
Commitment to empowering and building the capacity of Tribal citizens.
Desire to work with fisheries, including their human and ecological dimensions.
Ability to speak publicly and represent KRITFC at meetings, consultations, and conferences.
Desired skills: Fluency (any level) in a traditional language of the Kuskokwim region.
Location: This is a year-round position with residency in Alaska required.
